Dear Lancome "Doll Lashes", I hate you.

I guess the title says it all but I shall expand even more anyways.

I bought Lancome’s Doll Lashes mascara about two weeks ago. The purchase was against my better judgement, because I truly love Armani’s Eyes To Kill, I’ve even reviewed it on preaches n’ cream before, (see the review here ). But I was in the mall and felt too lazy to haul my butt to Yorkville and visit Holt’s, so I bought Doll Lashes.

At first it’s nice, for a good week I thought it was amazing. Then everything went wrong, so wrong. It started clumping and then flaking. The last three times I’ve worn it, it’s completely flaked off and given me major raccoon eyes. So gross, I hate it, raccoon eyes are the WORST.

I will be returning my tube tomorrow sans receipt, sans original packaging, and taking my $$ to Holt’s for my beloved Armani “Eyes To Kill”.

Volunteering as a backstage dresser for Toronto LG Fashion Week

Last week I was a volunteer dresser for Toronto’s LG Fashion Week. I took advice from many of my classmates to volunteer at least once for this event and I took a specific directive from a previous volunteer to be a dresser, because it would get me closest to the fashion and the action.

It was a fun experience and if you’re even remotely interested in fashion you’d enjoy volunteering for this event. I met lots of ladies and a few men with similar fashion interests and career goals as mine and it’s not too far fetched to assume that I’ll even be working with some of them in the future.

I met one girl from England who is travelling the world and trying to volunteer at an event at almost every city she stops in, I thought that was amazing!

Backstage dressing is fast paced, you have to have all the clothes ready to go so the model can change quickly and get back out on the runway. Afterwards you have to quickly pack everything up  and out so the next designer can get backstage and get their show ready.

A few things I learned about models:

  • They really are super gorgeous.
  • They are hardcore: The backstage tents were FREEZING and the models were stripping down and putting on light and airy Spring 2012 frocks. I had 3 layers on, a hat, a scarf, 3 to 7 more layers of fat and I was having to bite my tongue the whole time about being cold.
  • They are hardcore part 2: The shoes! Some of the shoes they had to wear were painful to look at and some of the girls feet were so messed up (cuts, bruises, future bunions). I’m a seasoned heel veteran and all I can say is, Ouch! I feel it for you sister.

My favorite experience of the week was to dress for was the Arthur Mendonca show. The clothing was truly gorgeous and he and his entourage were very well organized, creative, classy and really nice to the volunteers. It gave me a whole new level of appreciation for the line….Arthur, WHEN I’m rich I’m gonna buy your clothes.

Below are some of the looks that I got to dress throughout the week:

what's your favourite vegan food to cook so far?

Hi :)

Thanks for your question.

To be honest, I’m not the worlds best chef. I’ve really only been cooking for myself for the past two years and have found that I need to follow recipes to a T.

So far I havent really attempted anything too complicated. I’m on a mission for easy vegan recipes, but havent found a super easy recipe book just yet.

But one night I did veggie & bean fajitas, I’ve made really nice yummy salads and soups and my new favorite sandwich is Tomato & Hummus on Spelt bread.  I’ve also stopped in at Fresh once or twice :)

After today’s blog post I had quite a few people reach out to me on twitter, one in particular called @cupcakesandkale her blog is cupcakesandkale.blogspot.com, OMG, so many yummy looking things that I plan to try.

I’ll have to keep you posted on my blog as I try new things.

Thanks again for your question.

I just wanted to let you know that, while Toms Shoes does have some lovely vegan ones (wearing the Slate ones right now), not all of them are vegan and the one you show and link to have suede insoles. On their site, you can see the vegan ones in the drop down.

Hey,

Good catch, I didn’t actually know that.

I thought they were all vegan (I would have been seriously confused at the store while peering into a pair with suede insoles).

I’ll correct my previous post to show an actual vegan pair.

Thank you!

Meat Lover Turned Vegan, Literally Overnight

Something happened to me recently. I was taking the streetcar home and saw this poster:

image

I’ve seen similar campaigns before, but this one really stuck with me. The idea of cows being smart and curious creatures made me think about my beloved poodle who is a smart and curious creature, I would never let a hair on his head be harmed… and then the idea of cows being forced to be pregnant all the time to produce milk: barf, barf, barf.  Before even reading the entire poster I decided I was going full on vegan starting immediately.

It’s been about two weeks now and I feel really good. Without even discussing the ethics and just focusing on how I feel physically, I feel healthier, leaner and more energetic.

I haven’t had any cravings…Really…No cravings whatsoever and I’ve been eating the healthiest stuff ever.

The only obstacle that I feared was fashion related. I need new boots…can’t exactly go out and buy a pair of fur trimmed calfskin boots can I?

My idea of vegan footwear was that it is folky and leprechaun-like, worn by only the smelliest of hippies.  But my research has proven me wrong, here are some seriously stylish vegan friendly fashion picks:

image

Red “Marlon” Bag by Matt&Nat (Probably my new go to company for all leather alternatives).

image

Luxury picks from Stella McCartney (Oooo, now I HAVE to buy her stuff)

image

And of course, the lovely TOMS (They have a vegan section on their website).

There are so many leather alternatives available without having to resort to looking like a wench from Lord of the Rings and since they’re not leather, I’ll probably save some money…which will go straight to spending on Stella McCartney ;)

Have a great day!

hi! i saw your medusa costume post, i'm also dressing up as medusa and was curious as to what you would suggest wearing clothes wise? thanks so much!

Hey!

Awesome costume choice:)

Well, as far as I’m concerned, the Medusa costume is all about the hair, once you’ve got that down you can wear whatever you want.

I researched Medusa costumes for a long time before deciding to be Medusa and typically the costumes were long, flowing, Ancient Greece style frocks.

I personally prefer my Halloween costumes to be a bit sexy (yes, I’m one of those girls :P ), so instead of the long flowing dress I went with a fitted little-black-dress from H&M, opaque black tights, black heels and a wide belt. Plus, as I mentioned in my previous post, I adorned myself with a bunch of fake tattoos. So really, it was Medusa-goes-sexy-hipster.

I think as long as you get the head piece/hair done properly everyone will know you’re Medusa, so that gives you some wiggle-room with what to wear.  I’d suggest something comfortable, warm and probably black. You could even go with black skinny jeans and a black tank-top if you dont want to wear a dress.

Another thing to keep in mind is snake skin pattern, it’s so hot this fall and is perfect for a Medusa look. I’m sure that a cool snake-print dress, top, skirt or pant would look amazing…and definitely remember snake print accessories (I saw some at H&M just a few hours ago).

Hope this helps :)

Happy Halloween!

What should I clean my foundation makeup brush with? What if it is boar (I think) bristle? I would like to have a make up vanity put in my bathroom, would the steam/heat affect the make up? Does the chlorine in the city water ruin colour treated hair? Any suggestions on shampoo for this type of water. I will look for a filter to put on the shower head.

Good Morning!

Thank you for your questions. Here are my answers…

What should I clean my foundation makeup brush with? What if it is boar (I think) bristle?

I use a mild liquid soap from the health food store. Something natural, scent free and gentle will do the trick.

Soap the bristles, lightly rub them and rinse…then I just let them dry on their side on a paper towel.

I dont think a boar bristle brush would be treated any differently, just make sure it’s completely dry or else it’ll smell.

I would like to have a make up vanity put in my bathroom, would the steam/heat affect the make up?

I am not a scientist, so I’ve never conducted this test in a lab, but from what I understand, you are supposed to always store your makeup in a cool, dry place. Which is the complete opposite of a steamy bathroom.

Perhaps invest in a great makeup case that you can carry your makeup around in and store it outside the bathroom. I have this one which I store in a dark closet, I bring out when I put on makeup and store it back away when I’m done.

Does the chlorine in the city water ruin colour treated hair?

Chlorine is rough on all hair. Unfortunately it is difficult to control the minerals and chemicals in our water, so a filter is a great idea (I’ve ALWAYS wanted one, but was told it’s expensive).

In the meantime, if you’re sure that your hair is being affected by your water, try a clarifying shampoo once a week.

Clarifying shampoo is drying, so make sure to buy a good quality one; check your local Trade Secrets, they should be able to steer you towards a good one.  Follow up with a great moisturizing, colour protective shampoo & conditioner for your regular hair washes. I use Aveda Color Conserve for colour and condition.

Thanks again for your questions and have a great day!

Halloween Costume Idea: Medusa

image

Halloween is coming up fast, so today I’m going to give you some first hand ideas on how to be Medusa for Halloween.

I was Medusa last year. It was a great costume; it was fun, easy to do, inexpensive and just all around cool.

First and formost with this costume is the hair, it’s the only thing that really matters. Once you’ve got your hair done the rest of the costume just falls together.

These were my tools:

  • sponge rollers

image

  • hairspray
  • bobby pins
  • jumbo hair braids (1 pack) (buy these at any ethnic beauty supply store…even Wal-Mart sometimes has it).

image

  • rubber snakes (about 15-20)
  • hair elastics

This is what I did:

  1. Halloween morning I washed my hair, let it air dry with mousse in it and then set it in sponge curlers/foam rollers.
  2. Take the rollers out a few hours before you are going out (Your hair will most likely be a mess of tight curls).
  3. Take chunks of the “jumbo hair” and braid it into 1 inch pieces of your natural hair. These braids will add length, volume, mass and texture to your hair. (I probably did about 8 braids in random spots on my head).
  4. Add rubber snakes: Grab an inch or two of your natural hair and wrap it at the base of your head around the head of the snake- bobby pin in place. By wrapping the head of the snake you are allowing the body of the snake to cascade down (which looks good).
  5. Continue adding snakes and “jumbo hair”/extension hair, until everything is used up or you have no head space left.
  6. Try to style your hair “up” for height. I brushed out any of my remaining curls which made my hair look frizzy and then worked with the snakes and braids and created a bit of a Snooki “poof” this added height which balanced the length and volume of my hair.

After my hair was done I put on makeup, which is up for anyones own interpretation of how Medusa would wear makeup. A smoky eye with fake lashes would be appropriate…It’s Halloween, so go crazy, I did green shadow as you can see in the pics.

For clothing I wore a LBD from H&M, black tights, black heels and a wide belt; really, something I’d wear on any given club night. It was nice, sexy, comfortable and warm.

The real highlight (after the hair) for this costume was the fake tattoos, I bought as many fake snake tattoos as I could find (I found some at the dollar store and more at a Halloween pop-up shop) and tried to create a sort of alternative, hipster, modern Medusa with sleeves, a chest piece and even neck tattoos for good measure…with the tattoos: the more the better.

Here is the final product (I’m so sorry that I don’t have better pics-it was last year and I didn’t realize I’d be doing a preaches n’ cream tutorial).

image

Above: of course Linus had to get in the pic :p  Note that I looped the hair on top of my crown for height and allowed the snakes to cascade down.

I hope this works out if you give it a try- Please feel free to ask me any questions if you need some help :)

What are some good products to exfoliate? On aging skin how often should you exfoliate? What should I use to remove make-up? Is Dove soap O.K. to use on your face?

Thank you for your questions.

These are all questions and answers that I’ve struggled with and keep testing and retesting depending on my skin, the season and what’s going on in my life.

Even as recently as a month ago I had to reevaluate my entire skin regimen because I was breaking out.

First off, it is always a good idea to go to a reputable aesthetician to have your skin evaluated; and it’s okay to tell her that you don’t want to buy her spa products and to ask for drugstore alternatives.

To your questions, here are some products I use and recommend.

Good Exfoliators:

Right now I am using Dr. Brandt microdermabrasion exfoliating cream. I received a deluxe sample from Sephora and it has lasted about 4 weeks. A jar of it is $75, which is pricey for an exfoliator, but it does last, I really like it, and it seems to get great reviews on Sephora too. Plus, with Sephora you can have the item shipped to your door which is much easier than going to the busy store.

Use it twice a week and create a schedule, like, to only use it on on Sunday and Thursday nights. Also, I believe it is good to exfoliate at night because instinctively it doesn’t seem like a good idea to put makeup overtop of freshly scrubbed skin nor is it a good idea to expose it to the outdoor elements like pollution, sun or wind.

Another exfoliating product to look into is Retinol. Here is a link from a previous post that will explain more. Again, use it once or twice a week, on nights alternating from your microdermabrasion cream treatment.

Good Makeup Removers:

I like to use a gentle but effective eye-makeup remover first (ones I like, links included: Lancome, Clinique, Kiehl’s and Andrea Eye Qs are a bargin buy).

Then use a cream/milk cleanser to gently remove makeup (ones I like: Vichy (The Vichy website is down, grrr, but you can find their milk cleanser at Shoppers Drugmart or Bliss).

THEN a face wash (one with bubbles or more of a soapy feeling to ensure that “clean” feeling, the ones I love are: Spectro Jel or Kiehl’s)

Lastly, use a toner (again, Kiehl’s).

Is Dove Soap OK to use on your face?

Nope.

Honestly, I understand the temptation to use it; it’s a classic, it’s cheap, it’s easy… but it’s very drying and creates a barrier of dry skin that traps breakout causing stuff underneath…then you breakout.

Hope this helps…let me know if you have any other questions or how you do with these suggestions.
