Preaches n' Cream

Soapwalla Deodorant Cream
Natural product number 2 on my list of converts.
This was an eye opener for me, I checked the label on my old deodorant to learn that since I was like 15 I was actually using an antiperspirant. That’s scary stuff. I just think the idea of stopping something that is trying to come out of your body and basically pushing it back or trapping it inside is a problem.
So making this change was full on. I would be changing from big name (Degree by Unilever) antiperspirant to a natural deodorant from an independent company.
First and foremost, I’m stoked to not give my money to Unilever because of their animal testing policies, I’m so over these huge companies, I want my money to go to independents who are making superior products and making a living doing something cool…and you know what else?  In switching to a natural deodorant I’m actually paying double what I paid for Degree and I don’t mind at all; no animal testing and being able to read and recognize my new deodorant’s ingredients is worth it to me.
I found Soapwalla’s deodorant Cream at Jacob & Sebastion on Queen Street. The packaging is so cute and it smells beautiful: no more cheap “Cherry Pop Rain Mist” or “Mountain Dew Deflowered Lilly” scents like what you find in the drugstore, this deodorant smells chic and expensive. I wouldn’t mind if this deodorant became my signature scent.
May I add that it works! On my first day of use I took a hot yoga class and came out smelling like rosehips :) and for everyday use it’s great too. I even like the application method (your finger), I don’t think I ever really touched my underarms before using this cream, but now I do and it’s like, “Oh hi underarms, you’re nice, thanks for being part of my body, sorry it took so long to get to know you, sorry I treated you like crap all these years but that’s changed now”.
So, obviously I love this stuff and I think it’s a big deal and I think you should try it. TRY IT! View Larger

Dr Bronner’s Magic Bar Soap.
This is one of the first natural products I bought after reading There’s Lead in Your Lipstick.
I’m drawn to it because it has so many different uses (find 18 uses here) which means:
Less product packaging
Takes up less space in the home
Easier packing when you’re going away
So far I’ve used it as shampoo (very volumizing but a bit drying, I think I’ll try again in the summer). I’ve used it as a body soap (it’s perfect), a shave cream (perfect), makeup remover/face wash (worked, but a bit drying). I’ve used it to wash my yoga mat which was great (put my mat in the tub and lathered the mat up then rinsed), I’ve used it to wash delicates (loved it). I use it as a hand wash (excellent).
This will be a definite staple in my house from now on. I’m looking forward to using up all my old cleaning products and using Dr. Bronners liquid soaps as home cleaners. I also look forward to trying it when I’m at the cottage or camping because the natural soap won’t imprint the environment the way conventional unnatural soaps do.  View Larger

Review: Origins GinZing Eye Cream

I have a beauty pick that I need to tell you about.

You may have already guessed by the title: it’s Origins GinZing Eye Cream. Origins calls it a de-puffer and brightener for your eyes and I agree. I also call it an amazing-fix-all-miracle-in-a-tube-addition-to-my-top-10-favorite-beauty-picks.

It has a pearlescent shine to it, which gives a dewy youthful look. Use it around your eyes, and a few dabs on your cheek bones and you’re looking pretty healthy, dewy and sexy and you don’t look over done because it’s just a subtle cream, not a highlighter.

Some key points:

  • Allergies are killing me; GinZing seems to work in de-puffing my eyes when they’re at their worst.
  • It works as an under eye concealer and it doesn’t cake up.
  • It looks nice under foundation, giving that glowy healthy look.
  • It’s fragrance free (a must for my eye cream).

You don’t need to use a tonne of this stuff, and it’s $37 for a jar: I think that’s pretty reasonable considering it works and it lasts. I got my sample at Sephora about a week ago and I still have a good amount left.

Here’s the product shot:

And here it is on my hand. See the pearlescent texture/Ignore my weird hands:

So, I love this stuff and I seriously recommend that you try it out, you will love it.

Let me know what you think!

Boom Shellac-lac Boom

Late for this boat, I know…I got my nails shellacked last Thursday.
Actually, I wasn’t interested in doing it but my mani-pedicurist up-sold me, “how do you know you don’t like it if you don’t try it?”, so, unable to argue with this reasoning I agreed to try it.

It’s been 5 days and not a chip or a scratch, although I can see some signs of weakening, however; I’m impressed.

Definitely the thing to do for a vacation, conference, party, basically anywhere that you don’t have time or resources to fix your nails. View Larger

Home Made Sugar Oatmeal Scrub

Tonight I felt like a little bit of luxury and didn’t feel like paying alot of moolah for it, so I made a sugar oatmeal scrub before I jumped in the shower.

Pretty easy recipe:

  • Sugar

  • Oats

  • Oil (I used olive oil, I think any food grade oil will do)

Stir it altogether, take it into the shower and scrub: the sugar exfoliates and the oats and oil moisturize and soften skin making for a perfect mid winter dry skin remedy.

URBAN*DECAY Skyscraper multi-benefit mascara

I love mascara. If I was stranded on an island and could only have only product it would be mascara or in a much less dramatic situation, if I could only wear one kind of cosmetic, I would choose mascara, even over blush and gloss.

Recently I decided to go vegan and my vegan diet has been a success. To me, the next logical step is to start thinking about my cosmetics and buying ones that are cruelty free and vegan. When I ran out of my Armani Eyes To Kill I decided it was time to try something new which would be cruelty free (I later learned that Skyscraper mascara is not vegan).

Enter URBAN*DECAY Skyscraper multi-benefit mascara. I decided to try Urban Decay first, they are a cruelty free company with an assortment of vegan options; I am familiar with Urban Decay as a player in the cosmetics arena and it’s sold at Sephora, my motherland.

URBAN*DECAY Skyscraper multi-benefit mascara did not preform as well as my Armani (Armani is $10 more however). I just found it to be okay, O-K. Okay is not enough for mascara, mascara is the frame to the windows of the soul. It should be lush, shiny, fun to sweep along the lashes, unfortunately Skyscraper multi-benefit didn’t deliver any of these.

My mascara search continues…

However, this can get complicated; some cosmetic companies offer cruelty free products, but only on one or two items in their product line. I don’t want to buy a cruelty free vegan product from a company that does test on animals and uses animal products on everything else they sell.  Or a company like Aveda, which is committed to being mostly vegan, but then is owned by Estee Lauder who is flagged by PETA as an animal tester.

I’m still trying to figure out my stance and how and where to source truly vegan cruelty free products.

Please message or tweet me if you have ideas or recommendations for real cruelty free vegan cosmetics.
